Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the 2010 edition.

This exceptional new arrival joins Abode in bringing culinary sophistication to Bath Street. Chef Jim Kerr offers a reassuringly small menu with starters such as a sweet roasted fig with premier Parma ham and a hot and sour prawn broth that's thick with spicy tomatoes and coriander – a balance of textures that signals the chef's creative flair. From the mains a roast guineafowl is brightened with a vivid vermouth sauce rampant with leeks and grapes, while a rump of blackface lamb is served with fluffy homemade champ and an intense rosemary jus that complements the tender meat's spicy marinade. Sweets are imaginative too (liquorice crème brulee anyone?) and enthusiastic staff maintain an air of dutiful professionalism throughout. An exemplary and exciting newcomer.

  • High point: Exceptional cooking and impeccable service
  • Low point: Prices to suit
