Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the 2010 edition.

The days when ‘tapas’ was an exclusively Spanish concept are long gone and in Tapas International, the Harlequin group has taken the idea to its logical conclusion – small plates from around the world. Only, not so small, in this case. The multi-level nook-filled space, where Spice of Life used to operate, offers plenty of opportunity for large groups to enjoy a spirited meal without infringing on more sedate evenings out and a bar area downstairs provides a comfortable place to wait if the Friday night rush has taken all the tables. On to the menu and truly, all tastes are catered for, making this a good destination for families. While some international recipes do not quite succeed – the margarita pizza has barely a smear of tomato sauce and tastes mostly of base – a fritura mista de pescado plate of squid, king prawn and haddock in a light, crispy batter helps to banish them from memory. The sheer scale of ambition is admirable and even if some dishes fall short of the mark, the Indian section offers reliably safe harbour.

  • High point: Spoilt for choice? For £16.95 try eight tapas, if you can
  • Low point: Balsamic and olive oil – yes. Sliced white – no no no

Reviews of Tapas International (1293 Argyle Street, Glasgow)

1. Riotgrrl, Queens Park , Glasgow – 1 August 2010, 4:06pmTapas InternationalReport

Lunch time prices are incredibly good value for money. Really, I don't know how they can manage to trade such quality at these prices.

But even the evening prices are reasonable.

Have had both an evening meal and a lunch in this restaurant now and cannot praise it highly enough. Unlike other tapas bars in Glasgow, your table is actually big enough to see your food !

The traditional tapas (spanish) are exquisitely executed - the black pudding and chorizo is the best I've had - but the fun is mixing it up with Indian and European tapas. Among the Indian tapas we enjoyed was spicey onions with poppadom, and the spicey onions were the freshest and, indeed, nicest I've had in any Indian restaurant in Glasgow. Exceptional.

Recommend this restaurant highly. It's a new venture and the guy who owns it is also out there f.ont of house and taking orders, so the service is excellent.

Also, the house wines are excellent.

This is a place with real potential.
