This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.
The Curry Leaf is a relaxed and cheery affair, with tables squeezed close together and bright greens and yellows brightening up the mahogany furniture. A nice buzz feels entirely appropriate for its busy Byres Road location, and perhaps unsurprisingly, student deals and lunchtime thali options – platters of curry, nan, salad and rice – are popular choices. Yet there is no rushed service – in fact one can wait a bit, though this is more due to fresh cooking than lethargy. The menu is principally Indian tapas, mainly sauce-based – but little touches distinguish: green chillis liven up crumbly lamb koftas; desi korma is smooth and rich but not overtly coconutty; aubergine barta, the opposite – coarse, with sharp sweetness that works really well with the soft, juicy, vegetable. Elsewhere, the fish curry is commendably full-bodied – perhaps too strong for some, pakoras and tikkas well turned out, while tandoori lamb chops are brilliantly charred and chewy, but moist enough to linger in the mouth. As evening arrives, the lights dim for a touch of intimacy. All in, the Curry Leaf acquits itself very well.
- High point: Informal, convivial and good value
- Low point: Not suited to those in a rush
