Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

It's a crowded eating-out field on Argyle Street. But the latest arrival to the strip, French Mediterranean bistro café Andre’s – which opened just a couple of weeks before this Guide went to print in April 2009 – should hold its own with a casual mix of fine authentic cuisine, relaxed atmosphere and modest class. It looks the part, with a pale green façade, neat rows of pine-topped tables and walls adorned with little framed pictures of quirky French nightspots. Starters include crispy goat’s cheese with spinach and hot garlic and chilli prawns. There are mains of Portuguese mussels, Mediterranean veggie lasagne and a plat du jour which, if you’re lucky, will be fluffy cod served on mashed potato with zingy mustard sauce. The prices are the best part: five pound lunches and a two-course dinner for only eleven quid. Service can seem slow, but then rushing wouldn’t suit such a pleasantly laid-back little place.

  • High point: Lovely waitress
  • Low point: No wine lists or dessert menus printed at time of visiting
