Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the 2010 edition.

It may sound couthy, but the Little Inn is in fact a relatively straightforward sandwich bar with a couple of branches just off the Royal Mile: one near the top on Johnston Terrace, the other halfway down, tucked into St Mary's Street. Liveried in orange and brown, sparse artwork comes in the form of schlock horror album covers beside blackboards announcing the simple menu. Breakfast rolls and porridge, along with the familiar range of espresso-based coffees and a few basic frozen fruit smoothies, make up the bulk of the morning trade, moving into soup, sandwiches and toasted panini for the lunchtime crowd – a blend of local workers tuned into reliable food at low prices (sandwiches for £2.70 and soup for £1.50) and tourists glad of a friendly welcome and an easily navigable menu. Many of the sandwiches – half baguettes prepared each morning on site – come with gently amusing titles: Fishermen's Friend, Sunny Side and The Humourous among them. Space is at a premium: a queue of half a dozen fills each venue, with just a couple of stools available in the St Mary's Street branch to linger with your snack.

  • High point: Local prices for locals and tourists
  • Low point: Little that strays far from the conventional
