The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).
A new kid on the block this year, La Cucina is a modern and accessible take on the speciality grocer. One can buy fish, cheese, bread and dry goods with various supplies from Greece, Italy, Portugal and further afield. Meanwhile, the kitchen deftly creates dishes with all manner of Mediterranean flavours – many suitable for vegetarians. Everything (including cakes) is made on site. Be it a cute wee portion of mozzarella pearls and cherry tomatoes, or a New York takeaway-style cardboard tub filled with big, full-on patties of aubergine, parsley and pecorino, or a lamb meatball slovlaki (Greek flatbread), or just some stuffed vine leaves, this place makes meal times easy. It has a lovely demeanour where questions are encouraged, and prices that reflect a desire to develop a customer base rather than turn a quick buck. A most successful debut, then.
- High point: Tremendous value for money
- Low point: Meat dishes tend to sell out quite quickly
