So often takeaways churn out uninspired menus of tried and tired ‘favourites’ that are utterly undistinguishable from each other. Zen Kitchen, however, bills itself as an Asian fusion restaurant, producing delicious and distinctive dishes from around South-east Asia that make a welcome change from Sweet ‘and Sour Everything. The restaurant’s specialities indicate the wide-reaching geographic roots of chef Lawence Chan’s menu: a starter of prawns on French stick is a quirky take on the classic prawn toast, while Filipino pork stir-fry offers tender meat in a delicate sauce. On the side, Indonesian lemongrass vegetables prove that simple veg can become a delicious and richly flavoured dish when treated with respect rather than as an afterthought. With imagination and flair, Zen Kitchen shows that Asian food can be much more than your bog-standard Chinese (or Thai or Korean or Vietnamese …) takeaway.
