Once a magnificent but short-lived hat shop, Cranberry’s in the Merchant city is probably one of the best places in Glasgow for those who like to indulge that most British of habits – taking tea, and for ladies who lunch, bonneted or not. There is wide selection of teas from across the globe and a choice of fruit and herbal too. For a tea-shop there is an excellent array of well-prepared food. Traditional Scottish dishes, such as haggis neeps and tatties are warming and wholesomely home-made tasting, yet presented with all the style of a Michelin-star chef. Chef-like accents are notable elsewhere in the food, with particular attention to detail in the sauces and seasoning. They do an exemplary quiche here too – light, fluffy and full of lip-smacking cheesy flavours. Like all good tea joints, Cranberry’s desserts are something to save room for, the lemon torte served with vanilla ice-cream and raspberry sauce proving the pick of the plates. With helpful and friendly staff, Cranberry’s is quaint and unhurried and a lovely place to head for a spot of afternoon tea.
- High point: Good quality, wholesome food
- Low point: Food can take a long time to arrive if busy
