This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.
Situated somewhat incongruously among a plethora of wannabe hip cafés and bars in the Merchant City, Cranberry's exudes an old-fashioned simplicity, and a lack of pretension that will probably see it outlive some of its more faddish neighbours. Popular for lazy breakfasts, long lunches and mid-morning coffee and cake, the relaxed and friendly staff ensure that the atmosphere remains calm and down to earth, even during the inevitable invasion of office workers and lunching ladies in the middle of the day. The menu is dominated by sandwiches, salads and baked potatoes and cannot be said to be especially original or inspiring, but the cooking, preparation and presentation, whether it be smoked mackerel and cucumber focaccia, chilli beef nachos or haggis, neeps and tatties, is first rate. Virtually everything is made on the premises including a whole host of delectable cakes, pastries and deserts, all of which offer enticing accompaniment to afternoon tea with the newspaper once the crowds have died down.
- High point: Good home-cooked food and cakes
- Low point: 1980s ballads on the stereo
