Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.

For the last couple of years this has been the locus of the veteran Khushi’s brand, long-time staple of the Edinburgh curry scene. The Newington incarnation is designed with good cheer in mind, with a mix of red banquettes and cosy tables interspersed with panes of cunningly shattered glass and jars of brightly coloured peppers. BYOB is offered for no corkage, fostering an outgoing weekend vibe with a soundtrack of Bollywood pop (though stag and hen parties are discouraged). Starters are rather poor value for money – tandoori stuffed mushrooms translate as a handful of small field mushrooms with a brushing of sauce, and the paneer ke-shole (traditional cheese stuffed with chutney) is monotonous and bland. The choice of mains features popular classics alongside low-calorie tandoori options. A limply-spiced chicken karahi is redeemed by tangy tomato flavours and the creamy chicken sag is laced with warming spinach and strong cumin relish. Accompanying it all is a wide range of tasty, sweet lassis and smoothies. Overall the jolly atmosphere is the establishment’s strongest suit.

  • High point: Cheerful vibe and friendly staff
  • Low point: Overpriced and undistinguished starters

Biggest mistake this year!
The meal was average but seemed alright at the time. I however fell very sick with food poisoning and have spent 2 days regretting ever laying eyes on the place!
To be avoided!

I've been in before and the lunch menu is alright. Not a big selection of dishes on their tapas style lunch menu. Head to Mother India Cafe for supremely better food and choice. Plus they do not accept large bookings as the deem large tables to be too rowdy. Be warned.

AWFUL - Service atrocious - food bland at best, the only good thing is their BYO policy. Edinburgh has an abundance of Indian restauranmts to choose from, therefore choose somewhere else. Somewhere with a better menu, better quality food, better value for money and better staff. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.

Food was great, service seriously lacking. On arrival we were greeted with, "We need the table back at 8.30 like I told you." I was never told this when I made the reservation. When I said this, I was simply told "That's the way it is".
So much for a nice relaxing meal! We had just enough time for our main meal, and before our time was up we were told to finish as they needed our table. We didn't even get to finish our drinks, let along think about dessert or coffee!
The food was lovely, but wasn't quite enough to save the evening. We were rushed and made to feel really unwelcome. Another little thing that irked me was, although we were given complimentary poppadoms, you had to order the dips...which i thought was a little cheeky. I won't be back.

I love Indian food, but Khushi's was a real disappointment in terms of the food and the service when I visited on 21/01/2011.

The waiters are obviously told to push larger tables to go for the mixed starters (we were asked several times); but I have to say the vegetarian ones were really bland, and the pastry on some of them was really quite tough, some of the worst Indian food I've ever had.

When I asked for a vegetarian main course I was offered the chance to get two side dishes instead by the waiter. I asked if it was the same price, but no, it wasn't. Some others in my group didn't bother asking - that cost an extra £3 per head per person as side dishes are £5 each. My aubergine dish was decent.

On the positive side, the place was busy and had a good atmosphere. However, I have to say that I won't be back, and I would not recommend it to anyone. If this is the same team that used to have the restaurant on Victoria Street then I'm amazed, because I really enjoyed my visits to that establishment.

Another night at Khushi's Diner tonight.
For a Sunday night they were relatively busy, but the food (as always) was right on the money.
Can't wait to go back again for more curry!
