Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2012 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

Formerly the Park Bar, this Southside pub’s signature dish is sausages wrapped in bacon. Diners are given two 'kilted pigs' as soon as they are seated in the intimate dining area, which has comfortable chocolate-coloured seats and soft lighting. Though the menu concentrates heavily on meat dishes, there is a noticeable innovation and quirkiness in the meal planning. Haggis balls are rolled in crushed oatcakes, and coupled with Indian-inspired tomato chutney. Slices of tenderloin ostrich carpaccio are rather thick, but go well with the lightly dressed rocket and Parmesan salad. The main course list is an inviting mix of standard pub grub and slightly more refined dishes. Squid ink and salmon risotto is a fine option, or one can sample the grill – perhaps a rump of lamb, rib-eye or fillet steak served with home-cut chips, sautéd mushrooms, cherry tomatoes and a pepper sauce. For dessert, the soft vanilla cheesecake served with pecan ice-cream is a good choice. The Kilted Pig serves a variety of draught beers and wines, and the reasonably priced cocktail list features classics such as cosmopolitans, French martinis, and cola-flavoured ice pop cocktails.

  • High point: Pleasant atmosphere
  • Low point: Dishes need some fine-tuning

A real hit or miss here in every sense, food & service.

The kitchen is certainly not as good as when it first opened.

All in all still a nice establishment but certainly room for improvement.

Would have in the past only considered this place for a drink with old school friends, as it has a very local feel to it. However me and my boyfriend fancied some pub grub the other day and the old park bar sprang to mind! My word! The best pub food either of us have ever had! I being greedy went for the 'mans sized' fish and chips and he the burger! Superb! The waitress was young but friendly and very attentive! It's a casual place and that was exactly what we were after!

We waited over an hour for our food to arrive and what a huge disappointment when it finally arrived. We had all ordered steak and every single one was overcooked, also very poor quality meat. To round the meal off nicely we were promised free drinks only for the waitress to produce a bill for the full amount - useless. We will never be frequenting this place again

I would recommend not to buy Tennants Lager from this establishment as it truely is an awful pint which the management are aware of but are paying little attention to. As a one time regular im astonished that
the management are taking peoples custom for granted .

We have been visiting this pub with our young babies for at least a year now and always, until today, found them extremely welcoming, friendly and child-friendly. HOWEVER today, after the babies had eaten soup and a roll, the manager came over and told us (two young mums on their own with their babies) that the mess that was made was 'ridiculous' and then stormed out to the back of the bar. I put my son down and cleaned the floor with some wipes then called him back to say that I had cleaned the floor but could not take the plates out the back for him because I don't work there. He replied that if that was how we felt then we didn't need to come back. I have never experienced anything like this in my life before.
The bar was completely empty apart from two elderly patrons at the back. He continued to say that he had to use a hoover the last time we had been in the tidy the floor- a hardship for the manager of a restaurant which claims to cater for children in the NCT guide. We sometimes visit this establishment twice a week and always buy food and leave a good tip as we understand that babies can cause more of a mess than their older counterparts. I will be telling as many people as I possibly can not to spend money, as we have on MANY occasions, in this place to be treated with such utter disrespect IN FRONT OF MY CHILD!
Do not go to this pub. I would have given it a negative rating after such an upsetting experience.

We visited the Kilted Pig recently with our family to celebrate our daughters birthday. We had a great time. Even though the bar was packed for the derby game on TV, the service at the bar was speedy and friendly. The food was superb with nearly all our party having a different dish served by even more friendly staff. We would recommend the Kilted Pig for a celebration or just for a quiet lunch.

We visited here 2 days ago as my Mother and father in law were in town, the waiter we had was great, a friendly irish chap. End of good comments.

The food was bad, my chicen burger had been cooked so long or reheated so badly it was like rubber, it came with bacon on it which I suspect had been reheated from breakfast, so rubbery the entire piece of bacon came out when I tried to bite it as I tried to bite it.
My partner had a little cup of FROZEN guacamole with his nachos, my mother in law had a hint of cinnamon with her greek salad (maybe the chef picked it up instead of oregano) so she could not eat it and my father in law received 4 small bits of battered fish instead of one big one when he ordered the fish and chips so I suspect he got the off cuts. All in all, we are embaressed to have taken them there, we're not going back again. It's a shame we liked it when it was the park bar.

mainly the service, but also the food quality in this bar has gone down the toilet since it was taken over recently... expect to wait for up to 20 minutes to be served at the bar if there are any more than half a dozen folk in with probably just one hapless server meandering around like a lost cause behind the counter unshaven and half asleep!

sad but true

I`ve been here several times to eat and would recommend it. Tasty food served by attentive and friendly staff. The varied clientele makes this an ideal place to take the family (gran won't feel uncomfortable!) but it does get more pubby and rowdy in the evening, which I presume is the reason for the excessive number of tables and chairs jammed into the place. I think more comfy sofas would be better!

oh and this pub isn't in the Southside as the review suggests. It's Craiglockhart by Meggetland.
