A vast, open-plan space, its floors linked by escalators like a shopping mall or an airport, the Alea casino at Springfield Quay could be anywhere. Make your way through the gaming tables to the Red Leaf restaurant, however, and you know you’re in Glasgow – a vast panoramic window looks out onto the Clyde to provide one of the best views in the city. Now that entering a casino in Scotland is easy – no membership, you only have to be 18 or over – Red Leaf can compete with mainstream restaurants for the general dining public. It’s doing so by presenting fine-dining dishes such as confit of duck and roast venison at pub-level prices. For the most part, the food is well cooked and smartly presented. A la carte is reasonable, and deals including two courses and a glass of wine for £10 on weekdays are remarkable value.
