It’s very pleasant to sit at the window of Olive on a nice day: the perfect position to catch some warm rays. Ray Charles and some other mellow tunesmiths complete the relaxed mood. Those unfamiliar with the delights of modern-day Dennistoun could do worse than come here for some home-made soup and a fresh brown bread sandwich with hummus and roasted vegetables – among a choice of six sandwiches, which come with salad and hand-made crisps when served without soup – for £4.75. At the same price, the rustic platter: cheddar, brie and paté served with toasted organic bread (or oatcakes) and sweet pickle relish is good value and the cheese is fine quality. For a pound more, carnivores can opt for the Italian platter, with olives and sun-dried tomatoes as well as a selection of meats. At weekends, a ‘hot plate’ such as risotto, vegetable lasagne or meatballs is served. No desserts as such on the menu but the healthy tone continues in the selection of home-baking: the fruit loaf tastes naturally sweet and has a perfect texture – much like the range of delicious organic juices.
- High point: The all-day breakfast has six delicious-sounding options
- Low point: Could open earlier midweek to suit 9-5ers
