Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

A pleasing antidote to the chips-with-everything culture, Fit Food prides itself, as the name suggests, in offering wholesome sandwiches, light meals and snacks. Which is perhaps no more than you would expect, located as it is in Tiso’s outdoor activity store near Caledonian University. Wooden dining benches sit above the fleece jacket and hiking boot-filled store where the menu promises 'tasty, fresh, energising' food. The smoothies are sugar-free and come in four flavours including the tropical treat, with pineapple, peach and strawberries. Imaginatively titled sandwiches such as the Starsky and Hutch – a combination of prawns, rocket leaves, and mango and tomato salsa – are offered on a variety of breads from ciabatta to bloomer. But with such a tempting selection of cakes and biscuits, it is not all holier-than-thou. A giant Florentine slab is packed with flaked corn, chunks of cherries and ginger sitting on a layer of dark chocolate. Kids are welcome here, with their own 'munchkin lunchkins' menu offering small soup portions, toasties and baked potatoes each with fruit nibbles on the side. Almost everything served at the bistro is available as takeaway and orders can be phoned in ahead.
