This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.
Just a sandwich? Try telling that to the folk at Piece. Their dedication to the perfect lunchtime sarnie runs to roasting their own beef, baking their own ham, and making their own mayonnaise, relishes and chutneys daily. Where it is not feasible to prepare something themselves, they will try to source the best – smoked salmon is locally sourced, the cheddar is mature, rich and tangy, and the bread is organic. The blackboard above the counter shows a huge list of ‘possible pieces’ – possible since each is made to order so you can have them any way you like. Fresh soups are made daily like the hearty veggie Scotch broth, thick with mushrooms and pearl barley. Along with a good cup of Danesi coffee, Piece have an excellent selection of cakes picked from reputable patisseries, among them a dark chocolate éclair with chocolate mousse where you'd expect the cream, and a delicious toffee and pecan tart. Beyond striving for the perfect sandwich, Piece is launching a picnic basket scheme, to take away for the weekend or into the nearby park.
- High point: Brilliant range of DIY sandwiches
- Low point: Hard to find a seat at busy times
