With large continental cafe-style windows that open up in summer, Prego has a fabulous view of one of Glasgow iconic buildings, the Kelvingrove Art Gallery. At night the floodlit vista is particularly attractive. This informal venue is split more or less in two. There's a cafe area with leather sofas serving fine coffee, panini and cakes, and a restaurant section offering a good choice of Italian-Scots style food. Waiting service is smart and friendly. Starters include minestrone soup, a good litmus test for a good Italian. Thankfully, it passes the test, a thick vegetable broth steeped in all those Italian flavours; tomatoes, basil, bay leaf, salty bits of bacon and a melting parmesan crust. The main courses cover pizzas and pastas and house specials. The special of chicken breast covered in parma ham has moist flesh and is softly flavoured with pork. Inside it is stuffed with spinach and gooey cheese. Try the affogato for dessert, cool ice cream, a hot espresso shot and strong grappa which makes for an adult afters treat.
