The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).
Opened in January 2008, Aikman’s is in a quiet street off the Saltmarket. It’s within easy walking distance of Argyle Street, Glasgow Green and the Merchant City but provides a relaxing location due to the lack of traffic, plentiful parking and view of the restored 18th Century St Andrew’s in the Square Church. Apparently concentrating more on the takeaway market – it has room for more tables than there are at present – Aikman’s offers good Italian coffee from 8am on weekdays. Breakfast consists mostly of eggs, bacon and sausages on rolls or muffins, but there is also a smoked salmon and dill omelette and a full breakfast available. A standard selection of panini (add soup for an extra £1.95) is augmented by burgers, BLT, steak and club sandwiches and a special veggie melt which sounds the most tempting of all: hot open sandwich of caramelised red onions, beetroot and vine tomatoes, topped with melted brie.
- High point: The special veggie melt sandwich
- Low point: Could make more use of space
