The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).
This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.
Richard and Michelle Heller, the husband-and-wife team behind the long-popular New Bell, are well on their way to replicating the success of their original venture. Whether it is office workers perching with coffee and a sandwich, or locals enjoying the pasta, pizza and set deals, they are serving them well. The décor features blonde wood and ads for French alcoholic drinks, with a touch of fun in the red and blue-lit cupolas and Catch 22 poster (geddit?). A beaming Michelle is proud that everything bar the croissants is made on the premises. Start with a crowd-pleasing haggis crêpe in whisky sauce, or the arancini-alike risotto balls stuffed with mozzarella. For mains, a dollop of rosemary mash is so good it threatens to outshines the fine Borders lamb, while a simple fillet of Shetland salmon is beautifully set off with a pea velouté the colour of an owl and pussycat’s boat. Finishing strongly are the prettily-presented desserts such as a brandy snap basket holding juicy sorbet, and a wibbly orange panacotta.
- High point: Real care and effort evident
- Low point: Sometimes small portions

Specifically went here for breakfast on a Sat morning due to recommendation in List.
My OH had the full breakfast which he enjoyed and I had the frittata (large and tasty). Service was friendly and efficient - asking if we wanted our drinks before or with food and serving 3 tables in a row with water (note to other restaurants: efficiency = faster service).
The combination of food and service meant that it has been one of our best breakfast experiences so we would go out of our way to return there rather than return to some of the well known establishments in Morningside/Bruntsfield whose breakfast service can be a bit slow/ropey at weekends.

Two days ago I had dinner there with my girlfriend: lovely little place and very friendly staff!
Nevertheless, it took more than an hour for our main courses to arrive, and the place wasn't even full. The waitress politely apologized, but still... we were about to eat the table (not good for a date, huh?).
Starter was a tray of home-made bread. Amazing, but still... plain bread.
My fish course was very well cooked, but a tiny portion. And I don't think that when my girlfriend asked for a "well done" steak, she meant "burnt".
The desserts, on the other hand, were very good and pretty solid wine selection. We have mixed feeling about this place: I think it deserves another shot, but this time for lunch/brunch.
Oh: always remember to book in advance!

What a great find! A bit of the beaten track but well worth heading away from the city centre for. Had a lunch with friends and all four of us greatly enjoyed it, lovely food (delicious homemade cakes too!) attentive, friendly staff and buzzy atmosphere, huge specials board too.
Only slight drawback was that it was very warm in the restaurant, this may have only been because of the sunny day outside though...
Will be back and have recommended to all my friends, thanks for a great time.
