Guilty Lily is a rather lovely little place – the kind that cosily embraces you as soon as you enter, taking you firmly from the outside world and placing you snugly in their own rather gorgeous one. It is far nicer than the outside world too: all plush reds, deep browns, chandeliers and leather sofas. Sumptuous decor is not the only thing this little gem has going for it, as friendly staff appear swiftly to present diners with a menu that prioritises quality over quantity. Dishes change regularly, so while one week you might be dining on soft, succulent salmon with Chinese noodles, the next you could be enjoying a lightly spiced goat's cheese lasagne. Everything at Guilty Lily is just that little bit special. In the breakfast menu you’ll find spiced cannellini beans and pesto mushrooms; scan the starters and you’ll see baked Camembert – and take note of the drinks menu, for the juices are freshly squeezed. Speaking of non-alcoholic beverages, children are welcome here until 8pm and it’s not surprising they are happily received in so homely a place. Still, whatever the hour there’s bound to be contented customers of all ages.

  • High point: Mouthwatering food
  • Low point: A wee bit out of the way

Comments for Guilty Lily (284 Bonnington Road, Edinburgh)

1. Guilty Lily, Leith Edinburgh – 2 June 2009, 9:12pm(1)Report

Rude service, we're not going back, they lost us as customers.

My wife and I went in to have some lunch - she was also desperate for the toilet. Unfortunately because she started the conversation by saying 'can I use your loo?', before she ordered, the waiter/barman said "No" rudely, turned round and walked away. We could barely believe our ears and left.

Presumably he must have thought that we had just come in to take advantage of the toilet rather than eat, but something more polite, along the lines of 'I'm afraid the toilets are only for customers' would have brought out an explanation from us that we were indeed customers. Being rude and walking away was totally uncalled for.

I was immediately put off by the reception I received when phoning to book a table. Rude, abrupt and unwelcoming - I would recommend a few training sessions on customer service.

Fab food, fab atmosphere and great staff... just bring back the chunky chips we all love... you know it makes sense!!
