This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.
Candles, soft lighting and a piano player give this neighbourhood brasserie something of a posh hotel lobby atmosphere. The service is warm and informal though, and a mainly local and family clientele mean the place is actually quite relaxed. The menu is concise and well balanced, many diners look no further than the excellent value two-course deal that runs all day, all week. Delving into the à la carte, a smoked haddock risotto is an indulgently rich and creamy dish with plenty of fish and a softly poached egg, served, as many dishes are, as a starter or main course. A special of rack of lamb comes nicely pink and juicy if requested, with glistening honeyed root veg, spring onion mash and rosemary gravy. Baked sea bass fillets are a refreshingly light dish but with wonderfully complex flavours – a generous portion of fish with firm flesh and a crisp skin sits on a delicate salad of fennel, orange and spring onion. This dish bodes well for the neighbouring ‘Surf n Turf’ sister venue. Children are welcome all night if dining and a special menu caters for them.
- High point: Excellent cooking from a considered menu
- Low point: Love song piano repertoire not for everyone

Got a voucher on 5pm.co.uk for the Chateaubriand at Merrylee road. Wish I hadn't bothered spending the £30. When we arrived there were a number of other people also using the voucher so we thought that was probably a good sign...I wonder now if they felt the same uncomfortable we did.
For a start the restaurant was absolutely roasting, very very uncomfortable and the only time it felt cool was after visiting the bathrooms that were completely stifling. The lady that showed us to our table was pleasant but not friendly. The gentleman that then served us from that point onwards was just outright rude. He made no effort to even be polite never mind make conversation. He rolled his eyes when we advised we didn't want starters and after ordering a rare Chateaubriand we were told it would be 40minutes?!
The chef that served the food was a lot friendlier and made conversation. The steak was ok...the Butchershop on Sauchiehall street is 10x better though. I wouldn't have considered it rare - more medium. The accompaniments were small and served in cold dishes, so were luke warm even when they were first brought out.
The final straw was the waiter pacing back and forth to clear our ;plates and then lifting mine before I had finished chewing my final mouthful. If I'd been able to speak then I would have but fortunately for the staff I had my mouth full. When we advised we didn't want dessert, my husband having to practically gag me to stop me saying we couldn't wait to leave; the waiter went over to another member of staff and whispered that we 'surprisingly didn't want desserts'. It was embarrassing and extremely uncomfortable.
We will definitely not be back. At half price I was disappointed and left angry, if I'd paid full price I'd have certainly asked to speak to management.

Visited an empty Merrylee Road on a Sunday afternoon with my partner and 2 year old daughter for lunch.
Decor very nice but food was dreadful and the service was mediocre. I and my partner ordered a Pannini each and a 'kids' pasta dish with homemade tomatoe sauce. Pannini's were overdone and dry and there was nothing homemade or 'kids' sized about the pasta.
The pasta dish was clearly adult sized and on trying it myself, the sauce was clearly shop bought and poured on the pasta or the chef must have ran out of all seasoning aside from salt.
Once asked by our server if our lunch was nice, I advised that the pasta dish was poor and that the sauce didn't appear to be homemade. The response? A smile and a blank! Fair enough I'll email them, which I did........no reply!
Poor customer service, poor food and poor/non existent communications. Would never be back of my own accord, would never recommend and if they want to get a regular client base then they need to make changes.

Surf N Turf Merrylee Rd Bar and Kitchen, Merrylee Rd Glasgow
A Scottish steak and seafood restaurant in the south side of Glasgow has sprung up with the inventive name of Surf N Turf, it must have took restauranteur Gordon Yuill all of 30 seconds to come up with the name. This however certainly does what it says on the tin.
The restuarant occupies the same building as Merrylee Rd Bar & Kitchen although that is where the similarities end. The old dining room has been transformed in to an intimate room with white chandeliers, stags horns and soft lighting. The star attraction is a huge Gerard Burns canvas depicting a cow and a young girl carrying a saltire.
The menu here is simple with a selection of fresh seafood and meats to start with venison, lamb, fish and beef for mains.
My wives friend was visiting from London so there were three of us dining on Saturday evening. I went for the prawn cocktail (£7.95) to start after being assured by the waitress that this was not a normal prawn cocktail of limp lettuce and frozen prawns. My wife chose the same with our guest Charlie opting for the platter of hot smoked salmon (£7.95).
We were waiting for our starters when the waitress came round with the days freshly baked bread selection, which all looked very good. I had pistachio soda bread which was excellent. The starters then arrived and we were not disappointed. The prawn cocktail was a mix of succulent king prawns and langoustine with green beans and a spicy marie rose sauce. If i had a complaint it would be the ratio of prawns to vegetables was a little off balance.
Charlies dish of hot smoked salmon was also very good and the bit of the restaurants own whisky smoked salmon i nicked of her plate was delicious.
On to the main courses, my wife and i shared the Chateubriand served with a choice of potatoes and sauce and vegetables on the side (£49.95). Charlie picked the mixed grill which was a selection of fillet steak, wild boar, lamb and a duck egg. (£22.50) again served with a choice of sides included in the price.
After a short wait our main courses arrived. The chef came with the main courses and carved and served our Chateubriand. I thought this was a great touch and added to the theatre of such a spectacular main course. This was beef of the highest standard and really did melt in your mouth. I had side orders of fat chips, pan gravy and roasted greens. Although the ingredients of the main course were simple, every bit of this was cooked to perfection. Charlie also had no complaints about her mixed grill with the addition of the runny duck egg delivering an extra touch.
This is certainly up there with the best meat i have ever eaten and would doubt there is any better being served in Glasgow restaurants today.

Did the list staff go somewhere different? Lovely surroundings but the food!
Where to start,
Smoked chicken that tasted like the sandwich style chicken out of a supermarket not smoked at all, overpowering balsamic vinegar.
Scallops were quite fishy tasting which overpowered the rest of the dish, bland black pudding did not blend well with the scallops. Couldn’t taste vinaigrette at all.
Pork belly was almost all fat, what meat there was was half dry and not moistened by the fat at all. Rather a large fatty piece. Noodles were drenched in sauce, which tasted like soy sauce and not a five spice sauce, one cashew as well!
Gnocchi were mushy and more like stodgy dumplings, onions were delish but overall the dish was poor.
Risotto was lovely!
No asking our opinon on any part of the meal, hot plates placed down without warning, when we complained about the meals the owner looked at us blankly. Offered us desserts which considering the quality of the other dishes we declined, we didn’t even want to try the coffee.
Very bad meal, worst I have had in Glasgow, poor customer service and now I know why the car park was so empty!

decided to try out merrylee road bar and kitchen but wish we hadn't.
wine prices not too pricey but waiting staff need lessons on how to speak to guests, not just pour and walk away.
menu uninspiring, costs on a par with many upper-class restaurants though food not worthy of price tag.
main problem is portion size and taste,£8 for three of the smallest and tasteless scallops on a pea puree,my girlfriend had an equally small amount of mussels for her starter.she then had main course portion of my scallops,£18 for just five equally diminutive scallops with no sign of any accompanying vegetables and no mention that portion may be small, she then complained to staff and basically got ignored,my main of trout was equally tasteless and nothing special.
will never return to this restaurant as overpriced, tasteless food and unhelpful staff.
