The owners of Easter Road’s Rivage have taken over this corner restaurant at the top of Leith Walk with the aim of bringing a touch of class to Indian cuisine. Potential diners going in and out of the nearby Playhouse or Omni Centre are enticed in by the sparkling modern interior with its glass-topped tables and red leather-seated metallic chairs that are openly visible through the restaurant’s partially frosted glass frontage. Despite being on a busy street, though, once inside you do not feel like you’re being overlooked. Chef Ryad Majeane aims to win over diners with fresh local produce and an eclectic menu that offers curry dishes from a variety of different Asian origins and includes some of his own creative ideas – such as the very popular lamb curry burger. If you’re looking for a healthier option, this is also the place to come as the restaurant is promoting a reduced fat, reduced salt menu that includes lamb with just 12 per cent fat. A major selling point here is Edinburgh’s only Indian-restaurant charcoal grill, where a choice of kebabs sizzle away in the open-plan kitchen in front of diners. Some of the staples, such as a vegetable bhaji starter, are overdone, while the more adventurous dishes, such as char-grilled tiger prawns, are just right. Slightly inexperienced staff could be brought up to scratch to ensure that some of these teething problems are eased.
- High point: A contemporary twist on the usual Indian fare
- Low point: Some of the staff aren’t quite feeling the love

ZaaraReport -
The location for Zaara seems to be one of those sites that never makes a go of it. However, I hope that changes as the food is excellent. Four of us had dinner there, when we arrived the place was full of Indian diners, which has to be a good sign, but they managed to find a table for us. While the waiting staff need to get a bit sharper the chef obviously knows what he's doing and the food is well prepared and a bit different to the run of the mill Indian cuisine. I'd be happy to go back and overall I'd rate it 8/10.
