After a couple of pints, a pie at Biddy Mulligans will see your hunger away. This traditional-style drinking spot is the antithesis of the modern minimalist bar, though much of the décor is also possibly not that authentically ancient. Overall the Irish-themed haunt does a good job at being an unpretentious old mannish local with weathered character. Midweek it is still buzzing with drinkers and is obviously popular with the student crowd. A scattering of TV screens also attract those wanting to catch a match. While food is not top priority here, a decent plate of Guinness-battered haddock and chips with mushy peas or a generous portion of haggis, neeps and tatties will prompt few complaints. Desserts are not for those with a delicate appetite. Hearty pudding options range from hot apple pie to the predictable sticky toffee pudding and chocolate fudge cake. Live music five nights a week adds to an already upbeat atmosphere. At the heart of the Old Town this is one to remember for an unpretentious pint while soaking up the atmosphere of the Grassmarket.
- High point: Fantastic location
- Low point: Service reflects a low priority for food.
