Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.

Decked out in light oak with a scattering of brewery paraphernalia on the walls, the Stockbridge Tap is one of the area’s more pleasant drinking establishments. The quiet, traditional atmosphere, well-kept ales and dizzying array of whisky on offer appeal to its older clientele. Enthusiastic staff know their stuff, which is helpful when trying to navigate the extensive whisky and beer ranges. Perceptions of the food change almost as often as their cask ales, as each change in chef and management mean new menus and standards which have ranged from the sublime to the mediocre. Currently the menu is of tried and tested classic pub food which, despite lacking ambition, retains character through an emphasis on local sourcing. All meat and fish is purchased locally and the freshness shows: the haddock and chips is treated with a light beer batter and served with home-made chips and tartare sauce. A beef casserole is well seasoned and filling with seasonal vegetables served alongside it. This is a drinker’s pub, but the food is a good sideline that satisfies those mid-session cravings.

  • High point: Attention to detail to beer and whisky listings …
  • Low point: … doesn't extend to the food

Have to agree with Violet...quite shocking how bad the food is now...its probably not that poor as pub grub goes but its more that they have gone from Wood Pigeon, Cote De Bouf and Venison to Pasta, black pudding and sherry trifle...its got even more bizarre recently with "homemade sweets" scrawled on the specials board..tbh the food when I visited did taste homemade.....its just its now more carehome than stately home...

Its still a lovely place for a pint with excellent beer and staff that are as friendly as ever...just such a shame about the food, for a while it looked like Bells had some real competition for best burgers in Stockb. Guess I will just have to rely on crisps for the duration of the beer festival!!

Oh and guys could you just dim the lights just a little please

Well, the kitchen has re opened and I think I can sum it up in one word AWFUL. If you've eaten at the Stockbridge Tap before the new chef arrived, please don't go back, you'll ruin the memory of how fantastic the food used to be. Horrible horrible plates, horrible presentation, greasy, unloved, unseasoned food. Such a huge disappointment. You could always rely on The Tap for a lovely lunch or dinner, but now I'll definitely be going elsewhere.

Great shame. Best pub food in town. Innovative and high quality. Transformed the place from good to great. Now, no more. Why?

Well you're too late folks. The Stockbridge Tap kitchen has closed as a result of the parent company wanting to double the chef's rent. A plate of goose that laid the golden egg anyone?

Our home away from home away from home while we were living in Edinburgh - the best pub in town! We'll be back next year for a further inspection ...
