Loopy Lorna's Teahouse
Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2012 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the 2011 edition.

The pink, black and baby blue salon is bedecked with butterflies, the ceiling with silver-lined clouds and the toilets with kitschy Victoriana, and everywhere is strewn with cute tea paraphernalia. The gushing loveliness at Loopy Lorna’s might not be to everyone’s taste but there’s no doubting the message: pamper, indulge, enjoy – and who can argue with that? The counter groans with copious giant cakes and tray bakes are piled high in irregular heaps, chunky, oozing and vying for attention. A selection of breakfasts, hot mains and light bites is available, but the undisputed star of the show is afternoon tea. Now available from midday, this sumptuous treat consists of an assortment of sandwiches, your chosen pot of premium tea and an array of superb home baking. The crowning glory is the scone with its pot of thick Cornish clotted cream and home-made jam so fresh it’s closer to a compote, bright and glistening with real fruit. The portions are huge but never fear, an obligatory doggy bag means round two will be ready just as soon as you are.

  • High point: Afternoon tea – it's not just a meal, it's an experience
  • Low point: On the pricey side

A great little place to go with your girlfriends, but may not be appreciated by the men in your life.

The cakes are fab, but don't bother going for breakfast. This place is all about the tea and cakes, which they do exceptionally well, but if you opt to go early for a cooked breakfast you'll most likely be disappointed. They use good quality ingredients but they're in very small portions, and poorly cooked. Skip straight to the afternoon tea and you'll get much more pleasing results!

Fabby for the teacosies alone - we had the octopus on our pot...too cute! The soup is gorgeous, served with lovely bread. The cakes are really tempting and delicious. The service is friendly, efficient and speedy - especially considering how busy it is. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is because the portion sizes are a little too big and I don't really agree with wasting food but unless you are ravenous it is almost impossible to finish everything! They don't seem to mind if you share a piece of cake with your tablemates but I think it would make sense for them to cut the poritons a bit, the bowl of soup I had would have fed a giant! It is my only critisism though - everyone should experience proper tea at Loopy's!

Definitely quirky and indulgent, but I love it! There's obviously a lot of care and love that's gone into the cafe and it really shows in all the details. Scones were lovely and the cakes were yummy too!

It's worth the trip across Edinburgh.

This is a quirky place and would appear to reflect the owner's particular tastes. Is it a bit self-indulgent... perhaps, but that's no bad thing if it helps you stand out from the crowd.

We dropped in there for a spot of brunch, so didn't get a chance to sample the cakes which looked very tempting. Instead we opted for a cooked breakfast which despite having some good core ingredients was late, barely hot and generally murdered. A real shame, but i suspect if we'd bypassed the brunch and gone straight to afternoon cakes then I'd have been posting a much more favourable review.

I agree with the above comment, it's brilliant! I had a chocolate cake/truffley thing which was rich & heavenly and the coffee was fab too.

I wish it was closer to my house, but luckily it's right across from a bus stop so it's easy to reach.

Love this place! The food is amazing and the tea even better! Gorgeous collection of vintage tableware, super cute tea cosies, amazing attention to detail and a really lovely, relaxed atmosphere make this one of best places to escape from the "usual" cafes and coffee shops in Edinburgh.

The home made cakes, tarts and scones change daily and there's also a daily "hot dish" (best home-made ravioli ever!). Breakfast is served till 11am and, believe me, it's worth getting there early for! Proper afternoon tea is served on vintage cake stands, with tea in china cups - you can even bring your own bubbly!

A great place for little people too - high chairs, kid's menu and fantastic baby changing facilities.

Quirky, friendly, clean and such a refreshing change. I defy you not to LOVE this place too!
