This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.
An inviting space at the heart of Canonmills, Coffee Angel is an independent playing the big chains at their own game. With a clean, neutral décor of white, creams and browns it appeals to office workers and families equally. Sandwiches are made on the premises and specials such as cheese and haggis are available alongside the classics. Treats include banoffee pie and a light, moreish lemon cake. But it’s the drinks that take centre stage here with coffees, tea, milkshakes, frappés and smoothies each getting their own menu. The Oreo chocolate milkshake is a standout choice, a teeth-tingling combination of ice-cream, chocolate, milk and cookies. The healthier options look just as good though and never feel like a compromise. The mango smoothie comes served in a tall chunky retro glass and blends fruit, frozen yoghurt and a touch of syrup to a consistency that holds your straws bolt upright. The Coffee Angel website is slick and bang up to date, listing each day’s soups, salads, treats and specials so you can even plan lunch from behind your desk.
- High point: Shakes and smoothies for kids of all ages
- Low point: Feels a bit corporate for an independent
