At barely a year old The Treehouse is already a firm favourite with local businesses, patrons of the Cameo Cinema and King’s Theatre, and students, who enjoy ten per cent discount. Situated on the corner of Leven Street and overlooking Bruntsfield Links, the café offers some of the best breakfasts you'll find in Edinburgh – thank goodness they’re available all day. This oasis of comfort food is a grand hangover cure if you’ve overdone it the night before, and wonderfully indulgent if you didn’t. Tuck into a mountain of fluffy scrambled egg served with crispy streaky bacon and sausage or a stack of pancakes with dry-cured bacon oozing maple syrup, or even a bowl of piping hot porridge. Find solace in a slab of moist carrot cake, or home-made banana muffin, washed down with spine-tingling strong coffee or – wait for it – a milkshake! Lunch is home-made soup: always vegetarian and the sort you can stand a spoon in. Blackboards boast imaginative fillings for toasties and panini, including chicken, chorizo and swiss cheese and wonderfully garlicky hummus and roast veggies. Or you can make up your own. Morning trade is brisk here but afternoons are more chilled and there’s live folk music every Sunday at 3pm. The Treehouse offers simple, comfort food and scores highly for the feel-good factor.
- High point: Mint Aero milkshake
- Low point: Stark interior

Great food, endlessly friendly and helpful staff, i stop off for coffee and cake as part of my routine several times a week at this lively, welcoming cafe. Top grub, reasonable prices. Must visit if you head to the Burgh.

I eat here once or twice a week for lunch. Staff are always friendly and quick to serve. Food is so so good and very consistent - panini's always perfect, latte's and hot chocolate's lovely and milionaire shortbread super sweet. Highly recommended. Best of it's kind in Tollcross area - and I've tried most of them!
