Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the 2010 edition.

With nothing less than a full roast pig gracing the window, it’s no wonder that Oink manager Eilidh Marshall’s favourite thing about the job is observing the reactions from passers-by. Everything from massive double-takes to looks of horror and peals of laughter makes for interesting people watching. The concept is so delightfully simple, it’s a wonder more places don’t adopt it. The choices are simple: roast hog sandwich or roast hog sandwich with crackling. Sage and onion stuffing or haggis stuffing. Apple sauce or chilli. Carved in front of your eyes, this is pure, unadulterated pork goodness. The meat is tender and succulent, while sage and onion stuffing is nutty and herby and the apple sauce is sweet without being overwhelming. With more than 1000 pigs on their Borders farm, this family business can also be found at the weekly farmers' market for a bacon roll with a twist.

  • High point: Porky paradise
  • Low point: Very limited eat-in options

Good idea, but free-range rare breed pork and better quality bread and apple sauce would make it perfect!

I wish they had firmer rolls! I hate soggy bread. Good pork though!

Used to like this place a lot, but the price just keeps going up and up... It's now £4.60 for what's basically just a hot pork sandwich. Don't ask for a cold one though, unless you like eating big chunks of cold pork fat (if you do, go for it!). Also, the woman who runs the place is pretty nippy. Actually, less nippy, more just unpleasantly rude.
