This converted Georgian printers’ in deepest old Leith is a gem of a find. High ceilings, huge windows and a grand chandelier are offset by comfy sofas and a split-level eating area to create a bright and welcoming space. It’s an ideal place to linger over the papers as you share a late brunch and the weekend breakfast is a particular treat. With a perfectly poached free-range egg oozing over just wilted spinach and topped with simply sublime hollandaise sauce, the eggs Florentine might just be the best in town. If spinach isn’t your thing, the crispy bacon and smoked salmon versions are equally enticing. A wide range of quality sandwiches, burgers and specials are put together with an attention to detail that marks Rocksalt’s offer out from the crowd. The smoked haddock and sweet potato fish-cakes are a popular choice and made from fish sourced at Welch's fishmonger on Newhaven Harbour. Expansion into Scottish-style tapas on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings bodes well, with free BYOB and plenty of veggie options to ensure a wide appeal.
- High point: Perfect for weekend chilling
- Low point: Staff’s kitchen rat-run cuts straight through the space

I have eaten at Rocksalt several times and can't fault anything about it. The food is wonderful, the staff very pleasant. I have introduced several friends to it and they all say the same.

I have eaten here several times since they started doing the evening tapas menu and it has been exceptional on both occassions. Brilliant staff, excellent chef who you can very much trust to feed you very, very well and BYOB- fab!

Just had tapas at Rocksalt cafe and couldn't fault the food or service. We left it up to Craig, the chef, to provide us with a range of dishes. We are quite fussy, as my husband is a vegetarian and I don't like blue cheese, smoked salmon anchovies or whitebait. Craig came to see us to discuss our likes and dislikes and we were well pleased with the selection. He also checked that we'd had enough to eat. Will definitely dine there again.

Rocksalt is literally downstairs from us, without a doubt a successful place - always packed.
If I'm lunching then this is one of the places to be , always great service the staff are a delight and genuine. Their hygiene has never been in question using gloves to handle food and clearly washing their hands.
The menu is fantastic, good coffee too! :)
I'm not sure why there are negative comments here but I can say since Rocksalt opened I have never had a complaint!
Keep up the good work !

Been a couple of times now for the weekend evening menu by Craig Long (Ex Chef at Compass). Fresh produce served up in tapas style dishes 3 for £10 with a large selection of hot and cold dishes, meat and vegetarian options. Hake gujons and beef meatballs are personal favourites. Chef's specials include mini skewers which are on a par with the other dishes. Side dishes include handmade chunky chips, just the way everyone loves them.
Its a BYOB without any corkage charge, which makes it a cheap meal but with quality dishes.
Give it a try.

I went there for brunch today and the staff were quite unprofessional, young, and inexperienced. They were handling food and not washing their hands(certainly a public health concern),and wearing dirty uniforms/aprons. A turn off to someone ready for a good meal. Everyone appeared rushed and the one waitress had her trousers exposing her rear end. Not a very friendly group. The food was mediocre. Presentation was poor. I'll stick to other local cafes for my weekend brunches. By the way, this was my second visit. My first visit was better. However that was many months ago.

I am sorry you had that experience at Rocksalt. It can get busy at lunchtime although we do try to keep our service as efficient as possible. I am surprised that you found the portion size too small as many of our customers return daily for take away and sit in meals. I hope we can chalk that up to a bad day and hope you try us again? Thanks for your feedback.

The worlds smallest take away portion size goes to... Rocksalt!
well done all, all that hard work wasted by being measly and taking far too long at lunch time. over 20 minutes waiting for something that could only be described as a childrens portion.
AND it was cold!!!
Shocking. Will not be going back.
