Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.

A catastrophic flood early last year might have been a blessing in disguise for La Cerise’s co-owners Martin Wilson and Claire Coussmaker. Now their corner café looks great in an eye-catching red, green and black colour scheme, and has the air of a place which is new, fresh and reinvigorated. The aesthetics will be forgotten, though, when you spot the cake cabinet, a brightly coloured treasure trove filled with home-made delights like pear and almond tart, harlequin mousse and a rich and wonderful chocolate fudge cake that comes in doorstop-sized slices. If you can avoid skipping straight to dessert, there’s also a small sandwich selection and a range of daily main meal specials which might include a chorizo stromboli, macaroni cheese or beef lasagne, all of which are also home-made and served in generous-sized portions. Real fans of this friendly place might want to stock up on their range of frozen meals and ice-creams, while the adventurous will surely be drawn to the stand-out novelty breakfast item: a Mars toastie (that is, half a Mars bar in a toasted sandwich) with ice cream.

  • High point: Prepare to be tempted by the cake counter
  • Low point: A little out of the way for many casual customers

Reviews of La Cerise (199 Great Junction Street, Edinburgh)

1. feilefem, Edinburgh – 3 April 2010, 4:27pm5 starsLa CeriseReport

Back and better than ever, La Cerise provides a mouthwatering array of sinfully sweet treats, stromboli, pastries and ice-cream served in a chilled and friendly atmosphere by staff who are always smiling and happy to help with the difficult culinary decisions. One of my favourite places to sit and watch the world go by.
