This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.
Stockbridge residents have been blessed. Redwood is steeped in the kind of glossy Californian gorgeousness usually seen in interiors magazines. The menu is small but easily big enough to excite any palate. A starter of smoked chicken breast with couscous salad with herbs, toasted hazelnuts and sun-blushed tomatoes proves a small revelation. The couscous is of the ‘giant’ variety, so the usual beige grains have been replaced by plump pearls. It's a beautifully fresh-tasting dish suffused with lemony sweetness, and the chicken, so tender, finishes it off perfectly. For a main, the Asian spice-crusted fish with coconut lentils oozes fragrant sweetness, a little fillet of heaven. Equally good is the herb-marinated leg of lamb, with coriander-mint pesto and warm chickpea, feta and chilli spinach salad. Pink, sweet, salty, soft… absolutely delicious. Puddings are no less delightful: the panacotta is particularly fine. And so it's with some regret that you end an evening at Redwood, wishing for just one more course.
- High point: Every dish is wonderful
- Low point: It's open too few days of the week

We had a great dinner here. The service was excellent. The chef had even prepared a separate menu for the vegan member of our party. The food was really creative and absolutely delicious, with portions just the right size. We also liked the unusual drinks on offer - we would recommend the rhubarb vodka. :0)

We ate at Redwood last Wednesday and it was a real treat. Transported back to relaxed evenings in California, Sonoma Valley by the atmosphere, friendly waitress and the dishes we chose. The menu is short, but very sweet and it pushes you to try something different. The cauliflower, halloumi and chickpea fritters were so, so good!
AND we were able bring our favourite wine just to top it all off!
Fantastic!

BRAVO! Came into Edinburgh and booked at Redwood based off a friend's recommendation. Have travelled and lived in various cities around the world (Sydney, Santa Barbara in CA, Singapore, London, etc) and very pleased to discover this much needed addition to the Edinburgh food scene. The food is fresh, well-balanced, interesting AND healthy - all casual, no pretention. I had a delicious, winter salad starter piled high with mixed greens, goat cheese, dried cherries, pumpkin and the best candied pecans ever (recipe please?). After feeling very healthy, opted for the rosemary venison with a chocolate-red wine sauce - WOW! Miss Sprague clearly loves being in the kitchen and I will definitely be back...The corkage at £4 / bottle (beer free) is clearly a bargain - who wants to pay £15 for a bottle of wine you know only cost £4 wholesale?!

Corkage at £4 for an unlicensed restaurant is a bit steep. The late Kushis had free corkage. During a credit crunch it's all a bit steep for us.

Due to the nature of my work i tend to eat out a lot of the time. I have eaten in some fabulous restaurants around Edinburgh in my time such as The Tower, Cafe Royal and Number One. All of which can't be faulted. I was invited to Redwood by a friend for a casual quiet night out and it blew me away. Sitting in a quiet basement on St Stephens street it may be somewhere you woulndn't think of going but believe me it is a definate must on your where to eat list. Upon arriving we were welcomed in as if we were royalty, sat at a very plain but comfy table and made to feel welcome from the second we arrived.
Our food came promptly and was cooked to perfection, with the only wish we could have seconds. It is a BYOB but with corkage under £5 it's a bargain.
I honestly couldn't fault Redwood if i even wanted too. I've been once but it will become one of my favorite places to eat without doubt. Keep up the good work and i am proud to say i will nominate Redwood for the List's TASTE reader award.

I've been to Redwood twice since it first opened, firstly with work colleagues, paying a return visit with friends. The menu was different on each occasion with some unique Californian twists which I'd not seen in other restaurants. The service was excellent and the atmosphere was relaxed and friendly. BYOB is a bonus for me as it allows me to enjoy a better bottle of wine than I would normally have in a restaurant. I'm looking forward to returning again in the new year.

My team (of 10) and I dined at Redwood for our Christmas lunch and, I have to say, it was FANTASTIC! The quality of the food and the service were both excellent. The majority had opted for the crab, avocado and apple salad starter which was a good size and was delicious.
The main course of the deer tenderloin was beautifully cooked and the jus was just fabulous. I'm told the other main courses were delicious too.
All plates were cleared - I think that speaks for itself!
As Redwood doesn't yet have a drinks license, they are happy with BYOB with a reasonable £4 corkage. We left the restaurant very full and decidedly happy!
Well done Annette! We hope that your restaurant is around for a long time and goes from strength to strength.
