Banana Leaf’s parent West End branch can be found in fairly unassuming premises on the city’s Old Dumbarton Road. The unpretentious look continues inside this restaurant offering south Indian cuisine, with paper cups and a jug of water already on the table as you sit down. With more of a café feel to it, the restaurant’s informality is reflected in the very reasonable prices for top quality cooking. There’s no alcohol allowed, but a refreshingly tangy mango lassi soon quenches any thirst. The papery pancake dosas are classed as starters yet the stuffed ones are almost filling enough to be taken as a main. Freshly made, large and appealing – they appear like works of art from the kitchen. From the mains, the chilli chicken has a pleasing kick while the chicken coconut fry is a milder option with some of the creaminess of a korma. All dishes benefit from using meat on the bone, adding a satisfying depth of flavour across the menu. The inclusion of rice or chapattis in the cost of main courses make Banana Leaf incredible value.
- High point: Delicious and voluminous dosas
- Low point: Rather stark interior

We were using a voucher for a meal at Banana Leaf in Albert Drive.
When trying to post a review all that came up was the West end eaterie It was full of rave reviews--but let me tell you this was the Worst Indian meal we have ever eaten. We each had the tapas. In the 6-7 dishes there was little meat and the sauces were very runny. The pakora dip?---Tomato sauce!! Can you believe that!! I even said to the waiter (who was very pleasant) that this was the WORST INDIAN --his response -Really.You w/end branch may be good but this was SHOCKING

Visited Glasgow last week. We were taken to Banana Leaf at albert Drive, Glasgow - Authentic South Indian Restuarant. We had lovely Dosas, Masala tawa fish, Vegeterian Avial dish and Appam with fish curry - and finished up with Laddus and Payasam - the food was amazing and brought my memories back of my visit to Kerala & South India.
The price was reasonably cheap and service was excellent. Will visit again.

Just tried the Albert Drive Banana Leaf and had the most amazing potato and onion dosa, with three different sauces/chutneys on the side, all for only £3.50. Perfect price and perfect taste!

Hi Guys,
I have been to their new albert drive resturant yesterday and thanks to Andy of Glasgow. Banana Leaf prices has been reduced to the one in Dumbarton Road. Dosas are just £4 as before and Curries are £6 which still includes rice and chappathis.
Festive offer is now on and dosas are apparently as cheap as £2.99!!
Food was as delicious as before and will definitely come back again!!!

We recently went to their new Albert Drive branch and will NOT be going back. The prices are much higher. ~£6 for a dosa and ~£9 for a curry (once you add the additional charge for the rice or chapatti).
For that price you would be far better going somewhere like Mother India or Balbirs.

Anyone who has been to India can verify that the banana leaf is like what you'd experience over there. It's not trying to be a top class or even mid range restaurant - you pay for what you get, the curries are authentic and yes the service is slow but this makes for a true Indian experience. Don't go if you're looking for 'indian tapas', attentive service and presentation skills.

Recent price hikes of 10-20% as well as a new 10% sitting in fee have tipped the scales for this once cheap and cheerful place to grab a quick curry.
Small portions, soup like curry sauce and poor service. Go elsewhere.

Very nice food. According to indian friends it is quite authentic. As ama said the restaurant is quite basic but for the price it is well worth a visit.

I love this place! At one point I was going there for my tea once a week! Ok, the interior is pretty basic, but the food is cracking.
It's not for curry traditionalists mind you; you've got to keep an open mind. But if you do you're in for a taste sensation! The dosas are delish, stuffed with fragrant, spicy meat and served with chilli and coconuty stuff for dipping. The prices will leave you feeling pretty pleased with yourself too.
The service has always been efficient and pleasant too. Fair enough, it's not for a special occasion, but it is a brill place for a mid-week tea out or a take-away.

order from here for this first time and never again!! the food took over an hour and a half to arrive and when it did finally reach us it was cold! the portion sizes were tiny and the bits of cold food we did taste were nothing more than bland. when i tried to phone banana leaf to complain their line was constantly engaged for over half an hour, and we had to take the food back ourselves!! save yourself the bother and order from somewhere else:)
