Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.

The Shandon Belles is a hidden delight, situated below Two Fat Ladies at the Buttery, a stone's throw from Anderston Station. A side door leads down to the converted basement where diners are welcomed by a large set of pipe organs embedded in the ceiling. It’s a cosy area – the old wood panelling painted a light grey, the nooks and crannies dotted with mirrors, all go to make this attractive subterranean bistro feel rather special. Sharing the kitchens with the esteemed Buttery upstairs the understated menu doesn’t disappoint. Two large grilled sardines are simply served with capers and black olives. The only surprise is that being partnered with such an esteemed fish restaurant there is only one fish choice for mains: a large tranche of Shetland salmon with a meaty bean and chorizo cassoulet. Other mains include fillet burger, beef tagine, a tasty black pudding-stuffed pork belly or Irish lamb stew. Straightforward dishes are delivered successfully at a price that is simply unfathomable: three courses for £12 or £16.95 with half a bottle of wine. The Shandon Belles is a delight that deserves to be found.

  • High point: Three courses for £12!
  • Low point: Its insalubrious location

The atmosphere is terrific, the staff are efficient, friendly and simply superb all the time and every time...and, just as important, the food and the value simply cannot be bettered. This is Glasgow's hidden gem, the place where other those running catering establishments should be sent to let them see just how far behind the competition they are. Don't tell too many people just how faboulous this place is and the how helpful the staff.....it's got it all!!

This restaurant is absolutely fantastic! From the moment we walked through the stain glass door we were mesmerised by every nook and crannie of the place. Dainty and comfortable, candle lit and cosy, the food was to die for, we had fish, meat and veg dishes and all were as good as each other. The service was second to none, the perfect balance of friendly and attentive. It was a little hard to find, but so worth the looking for, and it has a little car park too, which is a weight of the designated drivers mind! A brilliantly charming place.
