Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.

The Southside is building up quite a reputation for its range of eateries using the finest ingredients, sourced locally, seasonally and ethically where possible. This café is part of the revolution. Choose from a selection of cheeses, charcuterie, cakes and the owner's hand-made sausages to take away or sit down for a hearty meal. A spacious, yet intimate café layout makes for a great meeting place to catch up with friends and family over a leisurely Sunday brunch, and service comes with a smile. Drizzle maple syrup over the thick slices of French toast and order the home-cured crispy bacon for the full rounded-belly effect. A plaque reminds us never to trust a skinny chef, and here you will eat with no reservation. After a satisfying free-range breakfast with all the trimmings of scrambled eggs and rare-breed pork sausage – no less than 80 per cent meat is blended with pungent herbs – order their dark and dense Guinness chocolate cake, and savour it with a second perk up of espresso.

  • High point: All animals roamed freely once upon a time
  • Low point: Not for those who prefer their waist over their victuals

delicious!! the service in here is great and very speedy, and the portion you get for the price you pay is fab!!! some of the combinations you wouldn't think of, but they work so well together!! i love eating here, and enjoy it everytime i do!!!

Took my husband for lunch today and was so impressed we've come straight to write a review. The welcome we had was excellent - friendly and chatty. We went for the sausage sandwiches as they were recommended and they really were delicious - 85% meat with lots of herbs & some spice too. The tomato relish added a lovely sweetish extra to the sandwich. Despite being full from the sandwiches we thought we had to try the cakes ! They were also tasty, especially the rich, warm, gooey brownie with double cream which my husband had. The coffee was excellent (and we're quite fussy coffee drinkers) - one of the best cups in Glasgow. Would highly recommend a visit.

This cafe-deli replaced Remedy in Pollokshaws Road a few months ago and it has been quite a transformation. The menu is varied and good value - it hovers between well-executed cafe classics (full Scottish breakfasts, homemade cakes) and light restaurant-style dishes (chorizo and bean salad, lasagna). It is great to have a local cafe which uses not only free-range eggs but also free-range pork and other ethically-sourced ingredients. Fortunately they haven't made the mistake of sacrificing taste for ethics - in my experience the food tastes flavoursome not virtuous!
There is a substantial deli too. Some products are quite pricey luxuries, though I've noticed some other products undercut the supermarkets - it's a good mix and nice for a wee treat or to buy a present.
