Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.

This charming neighbourhood restaurant is the place to come to receive an education in Italian food. The enthusiastic young owners are passionate about bringing authentic dishes of Italy to Edinburgh, happily sharing recipes with customers. A point is made of using high quality ingredients sourced locally, this particularly shines out in the excellent seafood dishes. The sauté di pesce uses the sweetest, freshest shellfish in a simple white wine and garlic sauce. Home-made ravioli are light and pillowy soft, stuffed with ricotta and tossed in sage scented butter. Even a simple side dish of cauliflower is transformed into a thing of joy by being fried in garlic and oil giving it a caramelised flavour. Puddings are equally good, particularly the tiramisù with decadent folds of mascarpone. The atmosphere is laid-back and there is no stiff formality to the service, fitting for a place frequented by returning locals. As to the look, walls are exposed brick, lights are low and the mood is one of happy satiation.

  • High point: Amazing food and great-value set lunch
  • Low point: Location (unless you live in Viewforth)

Very adaptable, friendly and the food I had was excellent. This is not the run of the mill Italian in fact it has a menu which changed almost completely between my two visits. They obviously care about what they do and are not afraid to take risks with the menu.
I'd recommend this place.

Was a disappointing experience. The food was inconsistent. Some of our dishes were excellent but others left a lot to be desired. It took 30 minutes for our order to be taken and over an hour before we actually had anything to eat. One of the waiters (possibly the owner) was surly and is primary reason we would not return.

This is an excellent restaurant that is family friendly. Rather than just an excellent family friendly restaurant. We took 5 kids and 3 grandparents and had a glorious time. Chic, tasty food for the adults, indulgence for the kids and nothing too hard to chew for the oldies. When the kids discovered that the calamiries was grilled rather than the hoped for fried variety the waiter sensed the disappointment and suggested they ask a special favour of the chef. After a trip to the kitchen the squid arrived beautifully lightly fried in crumbs. A good maturing experience and much appreciated. The wrinklies got a bit loud but they were tolerated. Have the fish starter - pure quality!

Disappointed with this place after the reviews I'd seen. Lunchtime Sat - the menu I was given showed the fixed price 3 course lunch was available every day except sun - not the case apparently. Shame as they might have been a bit busier -do people really want to go a la carte at lunchtime in a not very special area of town? Waiter (one of owners?), never managed to crack his face into a smile - not what I expect from an Italian restaurant. Why would I want to go back to a place where I didn't feel welcomed and appreciated. Food was Ok, but no dressing on salad leaves with starter, and no oil/vinegar on table and no black pepper. Isn't it time we moved on from the waiter and his big pepper grinder palaver. I want to do it myself!

Took a large group here for dinner and the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful before and throughout our meal. We had a good choice of starters and mains at a very reasonable price, and the food was good. As a bonus they were also very accommodating of a coeliac in our group, offering gluten-free pasta or adapted dishes. If I lived in Edinburgh I'd definitely go back!

For the first time, we've been disappointed by a hitlisted recommended restaurant. We ate at itri last night and the food we ordered was inconsistent. Some of our dishes were delicious, whereas others were disappointing. For example, the risotto was watery and lacked any substance. Service was very laid back, which was nice, but a little more attention to detail would be appreciated.
