The Terrace Brasserie
Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.

The swirly carpet and rather dated pistachio wallpaper of the Terrace Brasserie come as a surprise after the smart reception area of the four-star Royal Terrace Hotel. The dining room's subdued atmosphere is lifted in the summer months when you can dine on the outside terrace overlooking the hotel gardens. The Brasserie boasts AA Rosette status, though the menu doesn't rise beyond rather unimaginative mains of chicken, salmon, beef, vegetarian choice (ravioli) plus a couple of options from the grill. To start, parmesan and herb crostini and a sprig of pink rocket add interest to smoked haddock risotto, but the beetroot and goats cheese salad is stark without greens to accompany. The slow-cooked beef falls apart under the fork but lacks flavour, while the accompanying vegetables come chopped into minute cubes. Redemption comes with warm chocolate fondant or a perky espresso coffee crème brûlée for dessert.

  • High point: Summer dining al fresco
  • Low point: Lack of character and atmosphere

Meal in Terrace's gardens was superb.

There's not much pleaces in Ediuburgh where you can sit down in peace and quiet and have a meal. Royal Terrace offers a garden literally 5 mins for city centre but completly cut out from centre noises.

Meal was excellent . Chef surely knows his trade. We had a whiskey salmon for starter and ox cheeks with mash and homemade onion rings. Meat very nicely prepared - very tender, very soft- simply yummy. For dessert there was a scotish cranacan in chocolate form decorated with cute rasbery on the top and lemon tart with raspberry sorbet.

Waiting staff very friendly and attentive, without being too intrusive. Service was very fast and efficient, we felt very welcome there, and will surely go back again.

Fantastic meal !!!

My partner and I recently went here for my birthday and we had a really lovely evening.

The restaurant is very classy but at the same time a relaxing environment and the food was second to none. The pork loin was amazing and the chocolate pudding to die for.

The cocktails were expensive but very good and nice for a treat.

I highly recommend this restaurant and it will be amazing value when the list card is used.

1. Dave, Edinburgh – 18 November 2008, 1:43pm5 starsThe Terrace BrasserieReport

The food at the Terrace Brasserie was quite simply outstanding. It is without doubt the best value meal I've ever had and up there with the best I've ever had.

I seriously don't know how they can serve the pre-theatre menu for £15 (3 courses). They can only have made any money on our drinks!

We had a pea & leek tart with goats cheese and haddock fishcakes for starter, we both had slow roast beef with mash for main, and pear tart & praline/macademia nut cheesecake for dessert. We scoffed the lot (and there was a lot), and it was all beautiful. Just cant recommend it enough, even if it is out the way a little, and the atmos was quite quiet.

We will be going back as soon as the menu changes!
