Eating & Drinking Guide 2008

This review appears in the The List's Eating & Drinking Guide 2008 – in the shops now or buy online.

As a pointer to the kind of experience you might expect at the Curry Karaoke Club, its name couldn't be better: it does curry; it does karaoke. With sparkly hats and a DJ thrown in with the cover charge, it's an all-purpose, one-stop party shop. Situated in a remote corner of Yorkhill on the far side of the SECC, you're a ten-minute taxi ride from town. Described as a 'banquet', the food is basically a one-size-fits-all buffet, the various courses brought to your glitter-festooned table by professionally stoical staff. The food is standard issue curry: freshly prepared, mild and light without being bland. There are nibbles for starters, such as pakora, samosas and some tangy lime and chilli-infused chicken. Main courses come in korma, tandoori and mixed veg varieties. If you've anything important to say to your pals, bring a pen and paper – or, rather, take the mic. It's loud, rowdy and raucous from the get-go, with the dance floor likely to be jammed with stags and hens before the first course is cleared. The Curry Karaoke Club offers, and delivers, a boisterous night out for curry-prone exhibitionists, and groups travel from all over Scotland to join in the madness.

  • High point: Tasty, tangy food
