For those of you who think café culture is all about frothy coffee, floury baps and giant wedges of carrot cake, then think again. Red Sugar is all about chocolate, lovingly handcrafted by owner and chocolatier Steve Montgomery. There’s not a panini in sight. Everything in Red Sugar is made from super fresh organic ingredients – from the purest cacao to the packaging. The owners are passionate about serving chocolate in its purest and most natural form; it has none of the nasty added processed sugar or fats that you would normally find in a standard shop-bought bar. And surprisingly it's actually good for you. There are chocolate drinks, truffles and cakes, and the rather wonderful chocolate shots (pure liquid chocolate), Perfect Dark, Mini Spice Dark and Raw Dark Goji. Heaven in a shot glass. There’s also a selection of nine chocolate bars, including chilli and gold leaf, which you can take away for that lush luxury indulgent evening of cacao bliss. It’s certainly not to everyone’s tastes and by no means is it a healthy lunchtime sandwich choice, but if chocolate is your guilty pleasure, then be prepared to be ashamed … very ashamed.
- High point: Chocolate, chocolate and more chocolate
- Low point: Guilty pleasures – see you in confession …
