This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.
A biannual facelift due in April 2011 may see the décor spruced up but otherwise it is business as usual as the Earl continues to serve as both child-friendly café and student watering hole. In its café guise it offers freshly squeezed orange juice, coffee, cakes and a box of children’s toys, while for drinkers there is a decent selection of cask and bottled beers, a handful of wines and some attractively priced champagne. Well chosen house spirits (Wyborowa, Beefeater and Black Bottle) underscore a commitment to getting the basics right. This is reflected in a fuss-free food menu that offers reliable renditions of the likes of lasagne, stovies and haggis all day long, mostly for less than a fiver. Accompanying side salads may appear a somewhat limp afterthought but at these prices that is a very minor quibble. With curry night on Tuesdays and takeaway coffees and panini available every day this is a wee gem in the Marchmont neighbourhood.
- High point: Great value simple food
- Low point: Limp side salads

Not impressed with this place it was recommended but was disappointing, the staff were a bit offhand. Don't like the cramped feel.

I enjoyed my visit to the Earl. The pub has a nice cosy feel and laid back atmosphere. The clientele was a mix of students and young families as well as older couples, therefore there seemed to be something for everyone. Something which is rare to find in many of the city centre bars. The food had more than you would expect from your usual pub menu. I sampled a tasty stromboli and hearty soup. Service was friendly and efficient and I will certainly be back soon.
