The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).
This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.
With solid, traditional furnishings echoing the robust, confident flavours of its Tuscan-inspired menu, this basement restaurant is cosy and welcoming at any hour. Smartly dressed waiters add a sense of occasion, but the atmosphere is convivial and relaxed, encouraging you to linger all afternoon over wine and antipasti – platters come in meat, cheese, veggie or mixed varieties. Retro pendant and glass globe lamps cast a soft, flattering glow, providing further reason to stay. In a more substantial meal, spelt and cannellini bean soup is hearty and wholesome, marred only by the absence of bread to mop up that last spoonful. There are pastas, thin-crust pizzas, and a list of meaty regional dishes, swelled by daily specials. Polenta with melted pecorino, pork rib and Italian sausage is a satisfyingly manly dish – the cheese not contributing a lot but the slightly sweet, spicy tomato sauce is a perfectly judged accompaniment. After that, a cup of Caffe Vergnano is the only possible partner for their life-affirmingly good warm lemon cake, made by the owner’s mother and served with ice-cream.
- High point: Authentic local cooking, very well executed
- Low point: Tuscany inside but probably raining when you leave

There is clearly a pattern developing with this restaurant. Quite simply we had the poorest, overpriced meal I have had in a long time. A ravioli at almost £13 was extremely poor quality and this was supposedly one of the specials. Our starter of mozarella and half a tomato, to share, came with one piece of bread! Cost nearly £8.
It appears that this restaurant has had its day. It now looks like a cynical operation happy to serve extremely poor quality food at high prices. The service was offhand and the staff were not interested when told how poor the meal was. All we wanted was good honest food. We certainly did not get it.
This restaurant should not be hitlisted and I would recommend you go elsewhere.

After seeing this on the hitlist winners of the Scottish restaurant awards we were quite keen to give it a try.
We tried to eat there twice. The first time we went about 3pm on a Sunday. As soon as we went in we were rudely told they weren't open until 5.
The second time we went on a Saturday and had their 3 course Saturday lunchtime menu. For starters we had a Spelt and Bean soup which was ok and a cold meat platter server with 2 matchstick size bread sticks. The cold meats were obviously presliced and going slight brown around the edges.
For main course we had a risotto and a carbonara. The risotto was obviously precooked and reheated as it was dry, warm on the outside and boiling in the middle as if it had come straight out of a microwave. The carbonara was, without a doubt, the worst I have ever had. It was so salty as to be totally inedible. When I explained why I barely touched my main, the waiter was totally uninterested and there was no offer to get me anything else instead.
The desert was a fruit salad and ice cream which despite it being included in the menu we had to ask for.
I would certainly not recommend this place to anyone and we will not be going back there again.

How could this be in the hitlist?! It was average to the extreme. I think the only thing that saved it from being a one star was that the food was edible (though not good) and the serving staff were not rude.
I had high hopes as it's quite a nice interior and was busy enough for lunch. We went for the set menu which we had to ask for and that may explain in part the poor quality but even for that I expect better. Way too much salt in both. My soup was disappointing, swimming in olive oil - like an italian version of scotch broth but not as tasty and my main was more palatable but pretty unflavoursome. I make better risotto at home. Sack the chef and you might get a decent restaurant out of this place. Would not go back.

My boyfriend and I went for a meal as he recomended it having been there before.
We were surprised to find very poor service and an expenisve meal for not a fantastic quality of food.
We nicely pointed out that we did not enjoy the main meal and our comments were ignored and we were not offered the dessert menu.
There was a considerable wait between our mains being taken away and being aknowledged only to get the bill.
When trying to get a table a few weeks previously my boyfriend was spoken to rudely by one of the staff. We unfortunately would not recommend Osteria Piero.

Excellent choice for the family. I really cannot fault anything. The service, food, atmosphere and most importantly the child friendliness of all the staff (not in a cheesy TGI Friday way), was superb.
Although the restaurant offers more than being just a family type restaurant, it is ideal for either intimate dining or dining as a large group
The wine is a tad expensive, £40 for a Barolo, £75 for an Amarone However the food was of good quality, good value and the specials offered a real difference from your usual italian restaurant fare. (The rabbit stew was first class)
My daughter indulged in the profitteroles, and I am going deaf hearing how fantastic they were...........result.
I will definetly be going back and will recommend it to others.
