Perched above the historic Abbotsford pub in the heart of the capital (see separate entry in Bar & Pub Food section), this once Victorian dining room was modernised in 2008 with the update including plush dark purples and modern, leather-effect furniture. The Scottish inspired menu is also available in the bar downstairs and this is reflected in its content to an extent – beer battered haddock with fries, mushy peas and tartare sauce or a rump steak with hand cut fries. A starter of smoked haddock kedgeree and poached egg with a light curry cream sauce is wonderfully spiced and creamy while the Scottish smoked salmon platter with crayfish mousse and tarragon oil is a little overwrought and strangely lacking in taste. The beef and seafood are all sourced in Scotland and the options include haggis, neeps and tatties, a casoulet, a variety of burgers and a grilled fillet of salmon. Desserts are fairly standard with a tiramisu on the large size and laden with cream while the sticky toffee pudding is soothingly rich.
- High point: Modern twist on the kedgeree
- Low point: Pubby feel

Excellent meal at Above Restaurant at The Abbotsford today. First class ingredients, obviously freshly cooked. Main and dessert both thoroughly enjoyable. Staff extremely competent and friendly. Will most definitely be back.
