Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.

Glasgow’s only Malaysian restaurant serves a few Thai and Singaporean dishes alongside a big selection of traditional Malaysian cuisine with its hints of Malay, Chinese and Indian influences. Authentic food and very reasonable prices make this simply furnished café busy and buzzy with Malaysian students who use it as an informal social hub. The overall experience is charming and there’s little dumbing down for Western tastes. Very friendly staff are keen to help with the menu. Many dishes pack a punch from generous garlic, chilli paste and rich soy. A curried fish head with sweet flesh in a satay-based sauce enriched with coconut milk, potatoes and aubergine comes steaming to the table in a rough clay pot. Perfectly slow steamed whole sea bass in garlic and ginger is meltingly good while fragrant mashed prawn meat wrapped around a sugar cane skewer and served with sweet chilli sauce is another highlight. Vegetarian options are good with an intriguing selection of 'mock' chicken, duck, fish and prawns. The regulars all go for the sherbet drinks in many colours and fruity flavours with chewy tapioca pearls.

  • High point: Expertly prepared authentic dishes, packed with flavours
  • Low point: Café style hubbub can interfere with relaxing dining

Malaysian style restaurant. Konon. No display of Malaysian hospitality at all!

Let's not talk about the Malay Archipelago but in Malaysia, Malays are Muslims. In this kopitiam, Malay style fried vermicelli contains pork. If you come to Malaysia, you will not find Malay food containing pork.

The most disappointing is the absence of Malaysian hospitality. Will not go back and will not recommend any home sick Malaysian to visit this place.

having read a couple of the reviews before visiting this restaurant i found it amusing to recognise the waitress who was being referred to by some reviewers...for me the food in rumours was very good, but the waitress, as mentioned already had a very aggressive presence. when we asked to see the menu again to consider a dessert she made a comment about the people waiting for a table...i can understand that this is more a cafe than a restaurant and if she had taken the time to talk to us rather than give us a menu at the same time as 'dropping' her comment and then walking off we probably would have been understanding. i will be very resistant to visiting rumours in future because of my experience, but the food was good. i can almost see this waitress becoming a glasgow icon for all the wrong reasons!!the star rating for rumours is based on my overall experience, not for the food alone.

This place has taken a real dive of late. Rotten food - stodgy, over-cooked noodles, gloopy, over-salted sauce. All of it cooked and delivered with the charm and sophistication of a crabbit school dinner lady.

It's "authentic Malaysian" in the same way that the Blue Lagoon chippy across the road offers "authenic Scottish" cuisine.

In general, Rumours suffers by comparison with Asia Style up the road at Charing Cross, but then most restaurants would. The service isn't quite as friendly and the food marginally less good.

But it isn't all negative. For some dishes, though (Kung Pao Chicken, Salt & Pepper Squid), I think it does beat Asia Style. Another plus is the selection of Malaysian hot and cold drinks. The cold ones - fruit with sago, fruit or fruit jelly with chewy tapioca pearls - make a fine dessert, another win over Asia Style since there are no desserts to be had there and not much choice of drinks either.

I'd definitely recommend Rumours for lunch, but for dinner it would be hard to choose this over Asia Style, except maybe on Saturday or Sunday when you'll get seated and served much faster here. But that tells its own story, no?

I have enjoyed several meals at Rumours with my wife and friends, but tonight I went in on my own at 6 30. The place was virtually empty, but the extremely rude waitress told me I would have to sit on one of the breakfast stools facing out onto the street.

I asked if I could sit at one of the tables, and she just said NO!

I won't be going back to Rumours. A pity because the food is quite pleasant, but equally so, I don't want to sit like a monkey in a window.

was good, been a frequent customers here with my family. Then, this waitress (presumably was always behind the counter making the drinks) was in the forefront when we came in, really rude. My niece was just a child who took her fresh fruit juice she had into the restaurant - the plan was to order a full sets of dishes and she also wanted to have the teh tarik...believe it or not, d waitress was so dayum rude by the time we enter and kept saying no outside drinks....at least be more courteous, not that we aint gonna pay for our food or drinks. The other waitress didnt even say anything about my niece who is only a child holding her less over drink. We are not beggers, we could afford to pay any price if the waitress only realise her earnings is just meagre. I for once was really annoy at such an attitude, the boss of this place should fire that waitress or else the shop would have bad luck. Choi, hamka chan leh. This restaurant should be rated no star for service by that waitress.
