Formerly the old Belfry Bar, Henricks is a short walk from the King’s Theatre in Tollcross. Dark red walls, high mirrors and the glittering chandelier give the split-level pub a feeling of laid-back chic, and a leafy conservatory with neat tables and heat lamps makes it a prime drinking spot in the summer. Henricks features a formidable wine list as well as a reasonably priced cocktail menu, including such classics as Raspberry, French and Apple martinis. Breakfast is served every day until noon, and guests can take advantage of the Monday–Thursday meal deal: two main courses for £9.99. Portions are generous and generally tasty. Two fat triangles of deep-fried brie arrive with a silky cranberry and red onion relish. Sour cream, shredded cheddar and a chunky tomato salsa lie atop a bed of crunchy tortilla chips. The breaded haddock is first rate; underneath the sticky crumbs is a fat, flaky piece of fish. The char-grilled burgers are also a good size, hefty enough to hold the optional toppings of grilled peppers and onions, bacon, and chilli beef. The ice-cream sundae would look better served in a proper sundae glass, but the macadamia nut crust under the chocolate tart makes up for it.

  • High point: Excellent service
  • Low point: Chilly toilets
