Eating & Drinking Guide 2008

This review appears in the The List's Eating & Drinking Guide 2008 – in the shops now or buy online.

This is an attractive and chic little deli in the heart of the hip and happening Broughton Street locale. Friendly staff introduce you to what's on offer, and this includes hot specials, juicy seasonal salads and a wonderful variety of cakes – all prepared daily. Home-made chutney, fresh breads and Martin Wishart smoked salmon are on sale, as are enticing baskets of organic free-range eggs, plenty of which are used in the kitchen for the daily baking and quiche-making. Determined only to use the best ingredients, owner Ailith Anderson sources as much of her produce as possible from local organic suppliers, creating a menu that caters for every craving, including those on special diets. Polished floorboards lead into the back room where red polka-dot tables and a painting by local artist, Elph, meet the eye. Order at the deli counter and soon you'll be tucking into a fresh crêpe, stuffed generously with fillings from the deli, accompanied by nutritious salads and presented on a beautiful hand-made square wooden plate. A rich Italian Illy cappuccino and a hearty slice of chocolate cake with a dollop of crème fraîche make a happy ending.

  • High point: Considered and wholesome cooking, tastefully presented
  • Low point: Noisy in the back when busy
