Eating & Drinking Guide 2008

This review appears in the The List's Eating & Drinking Guide 2008 – in the shops now or buy online.

The swish new Quartermile development beside the Meadows is the setting for this impressive Swedish bakery/café/deli co-founded by Peter LJ and Jan Hedh, master baker and chocolatier. Glass walls, steel counters and concrete pillars make the lofty space light, airy and vaguely industrial, though congenial. The furnishings, designed by Nirvan Richter, and the brown paper menus scrolled down the wall are rustic and stylishly simple. As you enter, you're greeted by baskets of freshly baked bread – sourdough, Swedish rye, walnut and date loaves, lemon or spinach bread are just a hint of the assortment available, while artisan chocolate, crispbread and biscotti line the shelves between the two seating areas. Mums can easily park prams by a table during the quieter hours. Treat yourself to a Sencha natural leaf tea and cardamom bun, or luscious roast Angus fillet beef, horseradish and pickled red onions on Levin bread – or perhaps a stone-baked pizza followed by an artisan chocolate dessert with a nip of Calvados. Every now and then Hedh runs demonstrations on bread and chocolate, after which you can buy his bread book and their organic stone ground flour and try your hand yourself. Or do it the easy way – just take some away!

  • High point: Subtle flavours of some of the best artisan breads in town
  • Low point: You're in trouble if you're on a carb-free diet!
