Located right at the heart of the city centre Catherine di Placido provides a quick watering hole for business workers in the middle of their daily grind. Its clientele are more about grabbing that bap and making a break for it rather than sitting back and relaxing. But if you do want to take a load off and watch the world go by there are some great high stools at the windows. Clearly an place of individuality rather than a chain, there’s some good old-fashioned Italian cooking here. The staple dishes on the menu are home-made pizza, baked potatoes, wraps, toasties and the classic ‘soup of the day’. Other standouts include the sandwiches, the Big Easy (beef and cheddar), the Chicago (meatballs and mozzarella) and the New Yorker (pastrami, pastrami and more pastrami). It’s always more fun when a sandwich has a name, and the portions here are good and chunky.
- High point: Grabbing a high stool at the window
- Low point: Going through a rather untidy office to the toilet
