Eating & Drinking Guide 2008

For fans of the original Loch Fyne Restaurant on the west coast, this has been a much-anticipated arrival. Situated at what must be one of the best locations in Edinburgh, with spectacular views over the old fishing village of Newhaven and west over the Firth to the Forth Bridges, and with seating on the deck for 80, this is sure to be a summer hotspot. The large, cavernous space is a Loch Fyne extravaganza: with the dining and bar area as well as a shop selling fresh fish and other produce, this is a one-stop seafood venue. As expected, there's a range of Loch Fyne oysters, platters, mussels and smoked salmon on the menu, as well as daily specials. A starter of salt and pepper Cornish squid with chilli and coriander dressing is a measured mix, while potted brown shrimps with baby gem salad include a hint of coriander to bring new life to an old favourite. The mains are less successful, however. A special of monkfish with tomato jam is a small portion of fish and a large portion of jam, which is tasty but overpowers even the usually robust monkfish. A plate of home-made crab-cakes with char-grilled vegetable ratatouille is generous, but sadly lacking in flavour. However, the view and the ambience go some way to making up for this.

  • High point: The stylish interior and fabulous view
  • Low point: A few teething problems but high hopes
