Strathbungo is quickly becoming the in place in the city of fine café food and coffee. Grianach means ‘sunny place’ in Gaelic and describes itself as a café/gallery. It is a bit of a find, tucked away off Pollokshaws road, but once discovered you are certain to return. It displays simple décor, with white walls, dark wood tables and chairs and there are constantly changing small exhibitions of quality art. The menu offers soups, sandwiches, baked potatoes and salads. One table is covered with home baking displayed in antique cake stands just like your granny once prepared for high tea. The pea and basil soup is a thick delight of fresh peas balanced nicely with the flavours of fresh herbs. The sandwiches come with the freshest ingredients, hummus with a tangy kick and roasted peppers, or the roast beef and horseradish sauce is a good old favourite. The coconut and apricot slice covered in dark chocolate is not too sweet a treat to go with a mug of cappuccino. If the quality food does not cheer you up then there are light boxes at every table (a common feature in Scandinavian cafes), for those with a tendency for SAD seasonal affective disorder.
- High point: Wonderful home baking
- Low point: A little hard to find
