Brightly lit, open and contemporary, Café India – something of a Glasgow institution – relocated to the Merchant City in April 2007 after many years near the Mitchell Library. A straightforward one-page menu offers a good choice of dishes, the usual kormas and bhoonas sitting next to interesting fish specials, such as sea bass. Starters include chilli paneer – silky and home-made Indian cheese swimming in a thin, tangy sauce of tomato and green chilli – which is perfect for mopping up with naan bread. Khas seekh kebab comes as hand-formed fingers of meaty lamb mince, its spicy flavours accompanied by a cooling dip of yoghurt and mint. Among the main courses the dhania trout comes complete with head and tail, but has been boned, the pale and juicy flesh complemented by baby potatoes and a splash of dry, peppery sauce. South Indian jhingha stands out with huge, fat prawns in a rich, freshly cooked garlicky coconut sauce. For those on a budget, the pre-theatre menu offers three courses for £12.50, while on Friday and Saturday nights the karaoke/buffet in the downstairs function room should be a good night out.
