Gabbro
Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

Gabbro is not just another hotel restaurant – it is instantly clear on arrival that this place aspires to greater things. The entrance can feel a little drab, but once you're inside the restaurant, you're in for a proper warm welcome and slick service. A lounge area to the rear of the room provides a relaxing place to wind down, while the comfy banquettes and fresh flowers at the front make for a stylish environment in which to dine. The menu is a pleasant surprise too, offering quality seasonal produce with some imaginative touches. A brie and apple filo parcel makes for a filling starter, perhaps slightly heavy on the pastry but tasty nonetheless. For a decadent main course, try the roast Barbary duck breast with crisp Parma ham and a black pudding rosti, while a salmon and sole en croute with braised fennel is a lighter option. Desserts sound good on paper but are slightly let down in execution, with a raspberry and white chocolate brûlée disappointingly on the undercooked side. Good value wine by the glass and a wonderful walled garden out back are two great reasons to keep Gabbro in mind, especially on a sunny summer day.

  • High point: Walled garden just perfect for lazy sunny afternoons
  • Low point: Rather drab entrance

Gabbro is a family owned and delightful neighbourhood bistro serving up the highest quality seasonal ingredients, locally sourced and complimented by clean, robust flavours where a Mediterranean theme characterises the restaurant's dishes.

The bistro provides a contemporary, relaxing ambience where you can enjoy good service and friendliness as well as excellent cuisine! There are a good selection of well priced wines as well as other beers and drinks including champagne for that special occasion.

The monthly menu changes with the seasons and availability to ensure that only the freshest high quality produce is used. Meat, dairy products and other ingredients are locally sourced and organic where possible and all menu items are produced by the in-house chefs for your enjoyment. Gabbro benefits from magnificent walled gardens where alfresco drinks and dining are possible during the summer months.

Had a really great meal here tonight. It looks as though the menu changes often as the items mentioned above and on the website were not the same but have no complaints – the quality, taste and presentation were all fantastic. My husband particularly liked the cinnamon shortbread which came with his dark chocolate and orange mousse and we both thoroughly enjoyed all three courses. Menu reasonably priced but at £15 pounds for two courses and £18 for three courses this differs from what is outlined on the website. Well worth a visit – we will be back!

We had a lovely meal here. Highlights included a fantastically flavoursome wild mushroom and lentil soup and a toffee pudding with butterscotch and chilli sauce. Service was friendly and attentive.
