The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).
This modern-style, 50-seater restaurant shows an engaging determination to tick every box you could possibly desire. Open seven days, service kicks off at noon with a buffet lunch (free for under threes, £3.50 for under tens, £6 for students, or £6.85 if none of the previous apply). From 5 to 6.30pm there’s a £9.55, three-course early-dining deal as well as the main evening à la carte. Decent house wine comes in at a reasonable £10.95, or you can BYOB for free. Vegetarian options are plentiful, and there’s free delivery on carry-out for orders over £10. You can even bring your own birthday cake, and they’ll sing and light the candles. Best of all, the cooking’s fresh and flavoursome. The stand-out is the marinated meats from the charcoal-fired tandoor, served either as sizzling kebabs or with a sauce, perhaps tikka khumbi dupiaza which brings together smokey chicken and hunks of green pepper and onions in a satisfyingly textured and spicy stew, or Kathmandu murgh where garlic, spring onions and cinnamon up the flavour quotient of a velvety lentil-based sauce. Routine kulfis and ice-creams perhaps earn only half a tick, but over-all, Red Fort scores well above the pass mark.
- High point: Great for groups on a budget
- Low point: Service pressured when busy

We have been going to the Red Fort for the last 12months and have always found the food to be excellent. The service can get a little slow when busy at weekends, but overall we would definitele recommend this restaurant. The onion pilau rice is particularly good. Remember to BYOB. Great value for money

I went for the buffet lunch one Sunday. I walked in and the staff didn't seem to care whether I sat down or walked out again, nor did they explain how the buffet worked. The food was very ordinary. Meat curries were bland, lacking in heat and it was hard to discern the spices if they did infact contain any. Dal was slightly better I suppose, and the baajis were probably defrosted that morning. I won't go back. The buffet is totally outclassed by the excellent Mosque kitchen up the road - the difference is night and day. So Red Fort is just another boring, bland, generic 'Indian' alas.

Service was appalling...it was so disappointing! The food was marvellous - we all agreed, even the people who didn't get what they actually ordered. Really - it is great food, but they need to get the service sorted - not just the inaccuracies, but they way they deal with them. An apology goes a long way, especially with a series of problems, but it was not forthcoming at all, and one waiter in particular was downright unpleasant. Anyone wanting to try should perhaps wait a while until the service issues are resolved.

Food was very good and very reasonable.
Unfortunately it was all a bit chaotic. I kept asking if someone would take our order and was continually given a reasuring wave of the hand, however very little came of these gestures. Eventually after half an hour our order was taken and then we had yet another half an hour wait for the starter. After we finished we settled down to wait for our main course and yes you've guessed it, another half an hour wait!
I repeat the food was good and had it not been for the waiting, would no doubt be going back again.

After trying out surucci on the main road, we decided to give Red Fort a go. I'm glad we did. The food was perfect, maybe a bit too much, but all the same, spot on. Service, and price, and surroundings were also top class. If you're looking here for indian food, I highly reccomend Red Fort. Looks like a very good lunch deal too, 3 courses and a drink for £6, and also 10% student discount. I will be back, hopefully soon.
