Alla Turca
Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.

Alla Turca has a brightly lit contemporary interior, with glass tables, padded leather chairs and the odd scatter cushion adding a touch of haremic luxury. It has a pleasant, even sophisticated atmosphere – the walls are hung with pictures from Turkey, a gulet boat on a turquoise sea, a whirling dervish and copious blue glass talismans, warding off any evil eyes. The menu is simple but well thought out. It's a mix of Turkish with a bit of modern Scottish – not many places offer scallops and chicken shish. Chief among the starters is the mezze, with 10 options, mostly vegetarian, pungent garlicky hummus, smoky aubergine, fabulous warm stuffed vine leaves and spicy imported Turkish beef sausage. With a good bottle of wine it would make a descent main course in itself. House specialities include Iskender marinated lamb kebabs, Turkish-style herb pita bread, a mild tomato sauce and thick yoghurt. The Turkish delight crème brulée makes a fine finish, if somewhat sweet. Topping everything is the strong Turkish coffee, outstanding for real coffee lovers.

  • High point: The fine glass of Villa Doluca Turkish red wine
  • Low point: The modern light fitting in need of a clean

Although the atmosphere was nice, the music is a nice touch, the prices are too high considering the food (very average) and the chairs (folding plastic ones). The service was fine but a charge for this at 10% is already included. !Beware! coeliacs - the "rice" on the menu is actually bulgar wheat so contains gluten, ask as noone told us. We won't be going back.

Looked like a nice restaurant, but customer service is shocking. I would not rush back again.

We visited this restaurant in a group of 4 people which included a Turkish guy.

Service was good. Food was good. And they even made a Turkish drink that was not on the menu for our Turkish friend.

We were a bit sceptical after having read the above reviews. But were pleasantly surprised.

It is a bit pricey though.

I have used this web site for years to find restaurants and have often found them very useful which is the reason why I feel the need to comment on this awful restaurant. We booked through this site which is great however when we got to the restaurant the first waitress did bother to look for our names but told us they were fully booked. When we were seated - a wobbly table with plastic fold down chairs we had to wait ten mins before we got menus and a drink. Food portions were very small and everything tasted the same. After two courses we decided we were not spending any more time nor money in this restaurant. Too say service was slow is an understatement. 10% service charge automatically added to bill which we didn't want to pay but just wanted to leave. Staff never came to get bill. We had to go to service area to ask to pay!!! Wanted something different, music authentic and male dancers very good but food not worth the money.

Our first visit to All Turca.

The interior is impressive and though some have commented on the proximity of diners to each other it wasn't something that bothered my partner or me.

After being shown to our table... we waited... and waited. It was nearly twenty minutes before a member of staff asked us for our drinks order.

The starters were okay, not great, nothing horrendous, just okay. The main courses were fairly uninspiring. Now, that may have been my fault for ordering chicken skewers then chicken casserole; but I have to be honest and say there was very little difference between the two dishes.

My partner's vegetarian meal , roast chestnut and wild mushrooms, didn't receive a favourable review. Also, when you consider that vegetarians are paying a similar price for their courses as do meat-eaters, well it makes the whole experience less than enjoyable.

The guitar player did his thing and you'll either like it or loathe it. It wasn't for me.

This was our second visit to Alla Turca. First was disappointing, but we like to give new places the benefit of the doubt.
First impressions are good. Decent decor, smart staff. Interesting "fusion" menu. Good stuff ends there! Portions are VERY small. We were both still hungry after spending £75 on our meal (only one bottle of wine). Food was not particularly well cooked. All-in-all poor value for money.
Service on both our visits was relaxed (really slow).
Worst of all was 10% service charge automatically added to our bill.
Not a great effort from someone who cut his teeth at Oran Mor!
